Age 74, of Gainesville passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at home.
He was born September 1, 1946 in Buffalo, NY son of the late Lawrence and Thelma Schiefla Zanghi. Sam enlisted in the US Army in June 1966 and earned the rank of Sergeant prior to his discharge in 1969 having served in Vietnam. Sam is the President of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 193.
Returning home, Sam joined the Rochester Laborers Union Local 453 and worked until his retirement in 1994. He worked for Letchworth Central School as a bus driver for a few years before leaving to go to work for Recelli Enterprises. He retired in 2008.
Sam attended the First Congregational Church of Perry Center where he was a weekly attendee. He loved his grandchildren who meant so much to him. He enjoyed taking his dog, Daisy (PeeWee) with him on rides; having coffee every morning with his friends and puttering around the house.
Surviving are his wife, Cynthia Eccleston Zanghi, whom he married May 24, 2008; his children, Kristi (Steve) Weaver, Melissa (Joshua) Pierson, Samantha (James) Gardner, Jessica Kates, Alex Kates; his grandchildren, Mathew, Madison and Maci Weaver, Tyler Joy and Foster Gardner; his sister, Linda (Glen) Piper; his brother, Bruce (Leisa) Zanghi; his sister-in-law, Mickey (late Larry) Zanghi; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call Thursday, April 22 from 4 – 7 PM at the Robinson & Hackemer Funeral Home, 246 N. Main St., Warsaw. A veteran’s memorial service will be held on Thursday at 7 PM at the funeral home. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, April 23 at 11 AM at St. Michael’s Cemetery, S. Main St., Warsaw to be followed by Sam’s memorial service at 12 PM at the First Congregational Church of Perry Center, State Route 20A, Perry Center. Due to Covid 19 precautions, the funeral home is limited to 50% capacity and facemasks are required. Thank you for your cooperation. Memorials may be made to the Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery Administration.
