Robert M. "Bob" Shearing

Age 81, of Gainesville, NY, passed away on October 26, 2023 at Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry, NY.

He was born January 17, 1942 in Warsaw, NY, son of the late Donald Herbert Shearing and Elsa Dora Bauer. Robert was a graduate of Letchworth Central School Class of 1960. During his high school years, he played football and was a county champion wrestler. He also went on to take second place at sectionals. During his younger years Bob began dairy farming with his father. After graduating at Letchworth he studied 2 years at Cornell University before returning to the dairy farm for 24 years. He then took a job as a fuel truck driver for Gerrard Oil for a couple years before settling in as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service working from the Gainesville Post Office, from which he retired in 2007.

Bob was a very active member in his community, having served as the assessor in the town of Gainesville and later as the Chairman of the Board of Review. He was a former member of the Gainesville and North Gainesville Methodist Churches where he served as trustee and chairman of the Council Board. He was a current member of the First Congregational Church of Perry Center. Bob liked to travel with his wife Sally, taking trips to Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland in the 1990’s. He loved the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabres and Syracuse Basketball. He was an avid reader of westerns, especially Louie L’Amour, and enjoyed country music and crossword puzzles.

Along with his parents, Bob is predeceased by his sister, Nancy Pattridge; brother-in-law, Ronald Pattridge; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Shearing and Leslie Shearing.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Sally Higgins Shearing whom he married on August 6, 1966 at the Gainesville Methodist Church; his daughter, Suzanne M. (Timothy) McDowell of Gainesville; his son, Greg Shearing of Gainesville; his brothers, David H. (Eleanor Jacobs) Shearing of Perry, James D. Shearing of Gainesville; sister-in-law, Nancy J. (James) Wilson of Livonia, NY; brother-in-law, Charles A. (Emily) Higgins of Hilton, NY and Arizona; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
