Rita J. Simmons

Age 95, of Portageville, NY, passed away on June 25, 2018 at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw.

She was born November 9, 1922 in Buffalo, NY daughter of the late Edward and Anna Schlager Haynes. Rita was employed for many years as the restaurant manager at the Lower Falls Restaurant in Letchworth State Park. She was a longtime active member of the former Church of the Assumption in Portageville where she was a member of the Altar & Rosary society. She was a recipient of the Layman?s Service Award for the Diocese of Buffalo.

Rita volunteered for several area organizations including the Wyoming County Office for the Aging and A New Start Kitty Shelter. She also loved cooking, baking and knitting and enjoyed traveling on senior citizens trips.

Rita was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Simmons who died in 1986.

Surviving are her sons, Richard (Theresa) Simmons of San Jose, Calif., David (Sally) Simmons of New Tazewell, Tenn., Dennis (Patty) Simmons of Nunda; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.

There are no calling hours. Rita?s Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, June 28 at 11 AM at St. Isidore?s Parish, St. Mary?s church site in Silver Springs. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, Portageville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to A New Start Kitty Shelter, 6342 Denton Corners Rd., Castile, NY 14427 or Alzheimer?s Association of Western New York, 2805 Wehrle Dr., Suite 6, Williamsville, NY 14221.
