Patricia "Patti" A. Hume was peacefully freed from the confines of cancer on October 6, 2024, at the Charlotte House in North Java with her granddaughter by her side. She left this world having obtained the award for greatest mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to ever exist. We're biased, of course, but facts are facts.
Patti was born on November 2, 1944, in Warsaw, New York, to the late Richard and Dorothy Crawford Herman and packed a lot of living into her almost 80 years of life.
Her greatest adventure began in November of 1961, at 17 when she met Gary. A farm boy from Silver Springs, at a local square dance. He happened to be home on leave from the Navy and between his two left feet and bad jokes (we still can’t figure out how he did it) Patti fell head over heels. By May of that year Gary proposed and on November 23, 1962, they were married. (Boy, would I have loved to be a fly on the wall when her mother found the ring)
For nearly 62 years, Gary and Patti have been inseparable. They have enjoyed many trips together, raised two beautiful girls, and touched the lives of so many in their community. Together (always),Gary and Patti volunteered their time with many groups and organizations over the years. She was most proud of serving more than fifty years as a Wyoming County 4-H leader and thirty-five years with the Gainesville Fire Department and Rescue Squad. She was always the keeper of the cool washcloth for boo-boos and freeze pops were always stocked.
Throughout her life, she devoted herself to “mothering”; whether you were one of her two actual children, one of her adopted 4-H kids, her husband, a sibling, a friend, or even a stranger, you were “mothered” by Patti. She was your biggest cheerleader, made you buckle before the car moved, and made sure to constantly remind you just how proud of you she was. If sunshine were a person, she was it. She enjoyed gardening, a good trip to the casino, taking photos of everything, giving the best hugs on the planet and she never met a themed earring that she didn't like. She had a set for every holiday.
Her family was everything to her, and she was everything to her family. She is leaving behind an incredibly heartbroken, yet thankful group of people.
Patti is survived by her beloved husband and soulmate, Gary Hume of Warsaw; her daughters, Pamela (Gary) Souter of Silver Springs and Angela (Jan-Olof) Svedman of Sweden. Her sisters, Betsy (Craig) Adams of Florida, Myra (Charlie) Lutomski of Woodstock, NY, and Cheryl Merril of Malvern, PA. Her brothers, Jim (Nancy) Herman of Warsaw, Bill (Carrie) Herman of Rochester, and Peter Herman of Warsaw. Her devoted grandchildren, Chelsey (Bret) Zawadzki, Benjamin (Jennifer) Buckley, Patrik (Carolina) Svedman, Philip (My) Svedman and her loving great-grandchildren, Alivia, Beau, Thindra, Alexander, Lucas, and Charlie.
She was the kindest, most generous soul, and her family will be lost without her for quite some time.
Friends may call on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Robinson and Hackemer Funeral Home, 246 N. Main St., Warsaw. Patti's funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 2 PM. Burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Silver Springs at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Patti’s name to the Charlotte House in North Java, NY, or the Gainesville Rescue Squad.
