Joan D. Mccargo

Age 85, of Pike, NY passed away at home on November 30, 2019.

She was born in Sardinia, NY daughter of the late Elmer and Winona Witheral DeGolier. Joan was one of twenty siblings and in 1956, her family was listed as the largest family in America.

Joan was a graduate of the University of Buffalo, where she earned her teaching degree. While she used her degree as a substitute teacher for many years, Joan chose to be a homemaker. She also worked for a short time with the Wyoming County Department of Social Services but she was most proud of her time as a home demonstration agent with the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Orleans County. Joan was a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross and volunteered for the historical society during the Wyoming County Fair for many years. Joan was a member of the Pike Community Church.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Morris McCargo who passed away in 2008.

Surviving are her children, Elizabeth Mattingly of Bradenton, FL, David (Amy) McCargo of Pike, Marjorie (William) Asberry of Castile; grandchildren, Naomi (Ken) Tisdale, Michele (David) Paddock, Heath (Liz) Mattingly, Meghan (Eric) Weieheiser, Blaine (Stacy) Asberry, Kara (Matt) Case; many great grandchildren, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews.

Joan’s memorial service will be held, Saturday, December 7 at 2 PM at the Pike Community Church, Main St., Pike. At 3 PM, the family will greet family and friends for a celebration of life at the Pike Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 786 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, NY 14209 or Pike Community Church, 52 E. Main St., Pike, NY 14130.
