Carolyn M. Shelnut

Aged 90, passed away at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, NY on April 3, 2022.

She was born April 16, 1931, in Lindenhurst, NY. Carolyn graduated from Babylon High School in 1948 and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree at Providence Bible Institute in Rhode Island. In 1953 she married William Shelnut and there followed many years as homemaker, mother, and pastor’s wife. They lived in Providence, RI, Babylon, Troy, Alps, and Hermitage, NY. Later, she was employed by Acme; Christ, Brooks and Glosser Ins. Agency; Wyoming County Mental Health Department, and Allegany Rehabilitation Associates, working part time well into her 80’s. She volunteered at Crossroads House in Batavia and for the RAP hotline. For 20 years she enjoyed annual vacations to Maine with friends and also traveled with family to many states and Europe. She wore her faith in Jesus Christ daily and had a long list of Christian ministries that she gave to.

Carolyn is survived by her children, Pamela (Wesley) Sampson of Bliss, Jonathan (Pamela) Shelnut of Bliss, and Jeffrey (Vicki) Shelnut of Alexander. She leaves eight grandchildren, Stephen Sampson of Bliss, Sheryl (Daniel) Carro of Glen Allen, VA, David (Bianca) Sampson of Bluffton, SC, Bobby (Faira) Sampson of El Paso, TX, Timothy Shelnut of Bliss, Thomas (Mia) Shelnut of Tumwater, WA, Troy Shelnut of Greece, and Casey Shelnut of Alexander. Also surviving are 14 great grandchildren and one on the way. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was predeceased by her brother, John (Barbara Mueller) of Islip, NY and one grandson, Austin Sampson.

A Celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on June 4th at Bliss Summit Bible Camp, 6113 Horton Road, Bliss, NY 14024. Memorial funds may be sent to that address. Burial has taken place in Hermitage Cemetery.
